Vivian Sathre, who inspired the author to paint again, is working on a painting.
Most articles announcing the Artist of the Month write about the biography of the individual. By having a personal interview, I thought it would help members of the Fine Arts Guild learn more first hand about their new member.
Q - I see that you joined the Fine Arts Guild two days after you arrived in SaddleBrooke. What’s the hurry?
A - SaddleBrooke has a wonderful art guild, and I feel lucky to be teaching alongside these great instructors. I think it’s important to be around artists if you are going to do good work, and you need to have someone critique your paintings to keep learning.
Q - I understand you have had a successful career in writing books for children and teaching creative writing. What turned you on to painting?
A - When my husband and I moved downstate to Vancouver, Washington, to make new friends, I signed up for class at Clark College. I was hooked. From that time, it was a continuous stream of art classes and workshops.
Q - Did you do much painting after taking all these classes and workshops? I understand that you started working in three media, watercolor, acrylics and pastels. How did it work out?
A - While living in Vancouver, I was fortunate enough to win awards in the three different media. I had solo shows at galleries in both Oregon and Washington, and they exhibited my work in venues, such as the Hilton Conventions Center and the English Estate Winery. I also taught acrylic workshops to adults.
Q - What is your painting schedule. Do you find enough time to do your paintings?
A - My schedule? I usually get up between 4 and 5 every morning, get coffee, turn on my computer then head to my studio to paint. After taking a walk, looking for good photos to take, I come back and paint. My favorite photos to take are wild life, pet portraits. I love painting the eyes of animals. I’m fortunate that my husband doesn’t make demands on my time.
Q - I note that after all these years, you’re still taking classes. Any thoughts?
A - Yes. My personal thoughts are that every one should still take classes. Even professionals! My favorite quote is, “If you think you’ve arrived, you haven’t.” And I feel fortunate that I will be able to teach watercolors this fall.
Oh yes, the “mojo” thing. Because of some unfortunate accidents, this author was not able to paint for quite a while. When returning, he took Vivian’s class and was very discouraged at not being able to pick up painting again. Vivian’s comment was, “When a surgeon leaves his practice for some length of time, is he ready to operate when he returns?” She got me back in stride; and thankfully, I have my mojo back, and I am back
painting again.

The SaddleBrooke Singles Enjoy Spectacular July 4th Fireworks
Taking a break from the delicious buffet dinner at the SaddleBrooke golf tournament July 4th celebration are, left to right: Mary Aldrich, Barry Katkowski, Dory Dell, and Lola Townsend.
What a night it was! Over 50 SaddleBrooke Singles joined other participants to take in a soft, beautiful, breezy summer evening, feasting on typical Fourth of July goodies, then oohing and ahhing at the magnificent fireworks display.
The Fourth of July fireworks started the Singles off to a summer of more enjoyable activities. On July 17, there was an old fashioned ice cream social at the home of Arlene DesJardins. Then on Sunday July 25, Jan Maresca directed the Singles Golf Tournament.
At the monthly meeting, held on July 6, the nominating committee presented the nominees; and if elected, will serve as officers for a two year term. The nominating committee, consisting of Bob Spears, Dory Dell, and Gene Hameroff, offered the slate as follows: Sheelagh Simpson and Jan Martin as co-presidents, Fred Chapman as treasurer, and Joan Esch as secretary. Election of the officers was held at the August 3 meeting.
Then after the monthly meeting on August 3, the program continued with a special appearance by John Klinger of Rocky Point Tours to speak about potential tours. John’s Rocky Point Singles tour previously held was so spectacular that John was asked to return and discuss other possible trips that Singles might enjoy. One Singles trip, the Albuquerque Balloon Festival being held in October, has already been signed up.
On Saturday, August 21, a pizza party will be held at the home of Jane Akin. Then on Sunday, August 22, Jan Maresca will chair the Singles Golf Tournament.
All singles living in SaddleBrooke and the Robson Ranch are invited to join the SaddleBrooke Singles group. Our monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month in the clubhouse in the Coyote Room. In addition, we join the happy hour group every Friday at 5 p.m. in the Vista Lounge. For more information on joining the Singles, call co-presidents Danny Howell at 825-5798 or Arlene DesJardins at 825-0544.

Kirklin Prevails as M-PMGA 2010 Match Play Champion
Flight champions vs. flight champions are, left to right: Wes Glossner, Len Kirklin, Roger Bedard, and Dan Garrand.
M-PMGA president Jon Michels (right) presents
the Match Play 2010 championship trophy
to Len Kirklin.
On June 23 at 7:30 a.m., 43 M-PMGA members divided into eight handicap flights began the head-to-head competition that would, within one week, lead to the crowning of the 2010 Match Play champion. Three consecutive days of play in the heat of late June reduced the field to eight flight champions. They are Jon Michels, Jim Konon, Dave Fosmire, Meach Flanigan, Len Kirklin, Roger Bedard, Dan Garand, and Wes Glossner.
On the following Monday, match-ups of the flight champions began with Michels, Flanigan, Kirklin, and Glossner prevailing and advancing to Tuesday’s semi-finals. Michels defeated Flanigan, and Kirklin bested Glossner to set up the championship match set for 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday to headline the men’s league activity for the day. Kirklin set the early pace going four-up in the first four holes, while shooting a 37 on the front nine at The Preserve. Michels, the current men’s club president, fought back valiantly; but Kirklin’s early lead produced a 4-3 victory.
Congratulations to Len on a great six-day performance, to Jon for reaching the finals, and to the entire field for braving the intensity of match play and the heat of Arizona in June.
Upcoming Events
As the men’s league heads into the second half of its season, three major events dominate the schedule as follows: the annual Home and Home with the SaddleBrooke Men’s Golf League on August 4 and 6; the Member/Member tournament on September 1 and 2; and the President’s Cup tournament on November 3 and 4. These events will be organized by the Special Events Committee.
In addition, the weekly tournament play will feature a pick-your-own-team scramble event on October 13 that serves as a qualifier for the Arizona Golf Association event, and the ever-popular “Winter Bash” on December 1. Members are reminded to sign up early.
Holes-in-One
As always, members of the M-PMGA have been producing their fair share of aces, just not during league play most recently. Nonetheless, we all celebrate with these fellow players. (With apologies for omitting this in the last article) Bill Trapp nailed his ace on May 18. More recently, a group of 27 MountainView golfers, most of them M-PMGA members, enjoyed a get away day at Ventana Canyon. Mike Schroer found the bottom of the cup on the 154-yard 14th hole. Of special note, Mike has been playing golf since age 12, and this is his first hole-in-one. His playing partners and witnesses to this feat, Dave Jackson, Manny Maderos, and Mike Mueller, complemented Schroer’s accomplishment by scoring a birdie, a par, and a bogey, giving the foursome, a rare 1, 2, 3, and 4 on the hole.
Board Positions
Members are reminded that several positions on the board of directors will be open at the end of the year.
